Chile is a very long and thin country located on the southwest corner of Southamerica. The boundaries are: Peru and Bolivia to the North, Argentina to the East, Pacific Ocean to the West and the same ocean and Antartic Circle (chilean section) to the South.
Three major sections are available in continental Chile: The Atacama desert in the North covering 3 of the 13 regions; the Central Valley that holds another 6 regions, and Southern Chile with 4 more regions including an area called Chilean Patagonia.
Most of the population resides in the Central Valley: from La Serena city, on the shores of the fourth region; Valparaiso and Viña del Mar in the fifth; Santiago as the main city, in the Metropolitan region (13th); Rancagua in the sixth; and Talca in the seventh. The second largest city in Chile (after Santiago) is Concepción, the head of the eighth region.
All along the country, the cordillera de Los Andes lies between Chile and Argentina. Due to the high altitudes found in the Andes and the latitude, many (hundredths) water courses start there. This gets stronger going south from Santiago (located halfway along the country). So, this water courses result in many freshwater fishing places.
Top fishing destinations for salmonids in Chile cover the southern area of Chile. From Puerto Montt Area, located 1.000 km south from Santiago starts the best locations for flyfishing. This includes some of the biggest lakes close to this southern city, and all of the 1.000 plus km of the Southern Road (Carretera Austral).
Trout were stocked basically at the beginning of the 20th in some places in the south. Many of present inhabitants of Chilean Streams come also from Argentinean original stocks, and some others escaped from the many commercial salmon & trout cages established during last 20 years.
The most common species are:
Recently new species have become more abundant. Their presence is the result of the strong salmon industry, and the common escapes from cages. Among these are:
